It has been 50 years since the death of renowned and much loved artist Stanley Spencer.

During WW1 Bristol Mental Hopsital was converted into Beaufort War Hospital by the War Office to cope with the rising numbers of casualties. Stanley Spencer was recruited to the hospital serving the task of a medical orderly.

Glenside Hospital Museum is liaising with Sandham Memorial Chapel, to provide a series of special events and tours of the Glenside building in Bristol (Formerly Beaufort War Hospital during WW1) to celebrate the life and achievements of Stanley Spencer. The tours will take place in June, every Saturday, and will be self guided via the purchase of a leaflet. There will be numbered boards throughout the site to aid the tours as well as artwork by Elizabeth Turrell.

The museum will be open during the month of June 2009, with a temporary exhibition area being constructed whilst the works are carried out on the rest of the building. The exhibition will include items from WW1 & WW2, items that relate to Spencer, as well as key items from Glenside Hospital (Bristol Mental Hospital / Bristol Lunatic Asylum).

Opening Hours:

Saturdays 10:30am-3:30pm Wednesdays 10:00am-4:00pm
